Paying for a VPS With Cash: How It Works and Why People Do It

Every payment method is a statement about who gets to know you bought something. A card tells your bank, the card network and the merchant. A bank transfer tells two banks. Cash in an envelope tells nobody, which is why a small number of hosting providers still accept it, and why a small number of customers still send it.

This is an honest look at how cash-by-mail hosting works, why people use it, where it falls short, and the payment methods that give you the same property without the postage.

How paying for a VPS with cash actually works

The mechanics are exactly what you would guess. You create an account, generate an invoice, and the provider gives you a postal address and a reference code. You put banknotes in an envelope with the code written on a slip, mail it, and wait. When it arrives, someone opens it, counts it, and credits your account. Some providers accept several currencies; most round to the nearest note and credit any overage as balance.

Delivery takes days domestically and one to three weeks internationally. Registered mail is safer but creates a tracking record with your name on it, which defeats part of the purpose, so most cash payers use ordinary post and accept that occasionally an envelope never arrives.

Why people do it

Three reasons, in decreasing order of how often we hear them.

No financial trail. A card payment to a hosting company is a line on a statement forever, visible to the bank, to anyone who subpoenas the bank, and to anyone who breaches the merchant. Cash produces no such line.

No account to open. People without a bank account, or without one they want to use, can still buy a server. That includes teenagers, people in countries with restricted banking, and people who simply keep their hosting spending separate from their name.

Principle. Some customers pay in cash the way some people use Linux: because the alternative concedes something they are not willing to concede.

Where cash falls short

It is slower than any other method, which matters when a server is down and you need to renew today. It is unsuited to recurring payments; you are always mailing the next month early. Loss in transit is real and the provider cannot help. And, less obviously, the envelope is not trail-free: it enters the postal system somewhere, and a mailbox near your home postmarked on a given day is a location and a date. For most threat models that is fine. For some it is not.

There is also the provider's side. Handling cash means someone physically opening mail, which is why it is rare, why it is usually limited to a few hosts in a few countries, and why it occasionally disappears from a provider's payment page without warning.

The anonymous payment methods that compete with cash

Monero

Monero hides the sender, the receiver and the amount on the chain itself. Sent from a wallet you funded privately, it has the same "nobody learns anything" property as cash, arrives in about two minutes, works for recurring renewals, and cannot be lost in the post. Pseudonymous rather than anonymous; excellent for "the host should not know me", weaker for "nobody should be able to find out".

Prepaid cards and vouchers

A prepaid card bought with cash is a hybrid: the card network sees a purchase, but from a card with no name. Availability varies by country and many are blocked for online use.

Cash by mail

The original, and still the only method with zero digital footprint at the moment of payment. Slow, occasionally lost, and increasingly rare.

  3. Connect from where you want the host to see you. Tor or a VPN at signup, if the IP matters to your model.
  4. Pay the exact amount shown and keep the credential the host gives you; with no email on file there is no reset.
